What is Information Design?

(Photo I took on a recent trip to UK)
Information design is everywhere. I see it as soon as I get in the shower and grab the shampoo bottle. I see it when I open the newspaper. I see it in schoolbooks and in staff meetings. My son is bombarded with examples of information design from advertisements to educational games and books. There are great and inventive ways to convey information and they can inspire us and teach us and they affect all of us in some way or another.

  2. I like the picture you used, its got a lot of information on it. I was in Flushing(162nd)the other day and if it had not been raining I would have taken a picture of all the colorful signs in Chinese (I can't distinguish between the specific languages) and English together for a blog post because of all the information design there. Your post reminded me of how much information we see everyday without realizing it. I work for a publishing/printing company and see this all day long, yet still don't think about the outside world of information design.

  3. You are correct about the inventive ways information is conveyed can inspire us. Your page layout looks great - its not overwhelming when looking at it and the picture makes you want to read your blog.

  4. What a beautiful blog! The layout is super – The stripes add interest and are a great background upon which the squares sit. Was the background color and the photo combination fortuitous or did you have the photo first and then choose a background? And the picture – it really does highlight the information aspect of Information Design beautifully while at the same time strengthening the argument for the discipline of Information Design. It reminds me of the confusion I felt when standing in Trafalger square looking at the signs that pointed in every direction and not being able to understand just which direction the arrow was pointing at for the Portrait Museum! We spent a good twenty minutes running up and down the hill in on-again-off-again rain showers until we found it… Having the information is the first step but conveying it effectively is at least if not more important. Can’t wait to see your blog develop!
